If the piano and organ are used together, it is less expensive to tune the piano to the organ than
vice versa. Before this pitch matching is done, the church must be preheated to the usual service
temperature, to bring the organ to pitch. If the church is cold the organ will be flat. A piano
tuned to a flat organ will remain flat when the temperature rises, while the organ will
sharpen.
The piano tuner should use the organ Great Principal 4’ to provide the matching pitch. This stop
can also be named Octave 4’ or Prestant 4’. Another suitable stop is the Great Open Diapason 8,
also named Principal 8.
If a fine new piano has been purchased, it is desirable to maintain concert pitch from the start.
If the organ is significantly below A-440 at 70 degrees F, we recommend raising the organ pitch. A
quotation should be obtained from your organbuilder, as the cost will be much higher than a regular
tuning.
